The Fraser Valley Metis Association (FVMA) and the City of Abbotsford host the third annual Red Dress Day event on Sunday, May 5.

The event is held outside the old Abbotsford courthouse at 32203 South Fraser Way. It gets underway at 10 a.m. with an awareness walk and runs until 3:30 p.m.

The public is invited to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls by hanging a red dress.

The FVMA also wants to bring awareness to the over-representation of Indigenous women and girls within the justice system.

The event includes information, supports and resources that shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous communities, as well as drumming, free food and smudging.

May 5 marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Canada.

It is also known as Red Dress Day, a campaign led by REDress, a project by artist Jaime Black in which red dresses were hung to honour those who have been lost.
