Local band The Sylvia Platters releases a new album on Friday (April 26) followed by a show the following night in Abbotsford.
The album, Vivian Elixir, comes out on cassette and digital via local indie label Grey Lodge Records.
The band describes the release as “an intoxicating concoction, a little sugar to help with sadness.”
The album touches on wide-ranging themes such as depression, alienation, conspiracy theorists, and making love last.
“My inner and outer worlds have felt like chaotic places to inhabit over the past few years,” says co-lead vocalist and guitarist Nick Ubels.
“This record is an attempt to make sense of how to move forward with your soul intact.”
On Vivian Elixir, the band says they have sharpened their distinctive jangle pop sounds while touching new textures such as country on Severance, heartland rock on Creased Sneaker, and even drum machines on St. Catherine.
It all culminates in Kool Aid Blue, an anthem of self-discovery and self-destruction.
The Abbotsford-based band has been crafting idiosyncratic jangle pop gems since 2014.
In addition to Ubels, the members are Alex Kerc-Murchison on guitar, Stephen Carl O’Shea on bass, and Tim Ubels on drums and vocals.
The Sylvia Platters celebrate the album release with a show on Saturday, April 27 with the bands Devours and Hollow Twin.
The all-ages show starts at 7:30 p.m. at The Banquet Room at 3471 Clearbrook Rd. Tickets are $12 in advance at eventbrite.ca and $15 at the door.
