Abbotsford wrestlers excelled at the 2024 Canadian Wrestling Championships (U19, U17, U15), which ran on April 5 and 6 in Mississauga, Ont.
Miri Piri Wrestling Club wrestler Gurshar Johal took home first place in the U17 men’s freestyle 55 kilograms division with a 10-6 decision over Toronto’s Ali Sarwari. Johal was also named the most outstanding wrestler in the U17 division.
Abbotsford’s Guru Gobind Singh Wrestling Club also scored an impressive medal haul and helped B.C. win the provincial team award in the U19 men’s competition.
GGSWC had two gold medals apiece in the U19 division from Michealjeet Grewal at 92 kg (freestyle and Greco-Roman), Tejvir Dhinsa at 110 kg (freestyle and Greco-Roman) and Jagroop Dhinsa at 125 kg (freestyle and Greco-Roman).
GGSWC’s Mehtab Rai also collected two gold medals, winning top prize in the U17 men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions. GGSWC’s Roop Ghuman was the only other Abbotsford athlete to collect gold as he won the U15 men’s freestyle 48 kg division.
Abbotsford wrestlers placing second consisted of: GGSWC’s Chanveer Grewal (U15 men’s Greco-Roman 44 kg), GGSWC’s Jovanpreet Johal (U17 men’s freestyle 71 kg), MPWC’s Gurpartap Ghuman (U17 men’s Greco-Roman 80 kg), GGSWC’s Rubin Dhaliwal (U17 men’s Greco-Roman 125 kg), MPWC’s Prithvi Mann (U19 men’s Greco-Roman 71 kg), GGSWC’s Jovanpreet Johal (U17 men’s freestyle 71 kg) and GGSWC’s Mehar Deol (U17 men’s freestyle 80 kg).
Abbotford third place finishers were: GGSWC’s Harshan Mann (U15 men’s Greco-Roman 41 kg), GGSWC’s Jasnoor Mann (U17 women’s Greco-Roman 69 kg), GGSWC’s Roop Ghuman (U15 men’s Greco-Roman 48 kg), GGSWC’s Harshawn Pandher (U15 men’s Greco-Roman 68 kg), MPWC’s Gurkaran Gill (U17 men’s Greco-Roman 110 kg), MPWC’s Dominic Wendt (U19 men’s freestyle 60 kg), GGSWC’s Mehar Deol (U17 men’s Greco-Roman 80 kg) and GGSWC’s Rubin Dhaliwal (U17 men’s freestyle 125 kg).
