A new mural adorns the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Abbotsford Regional hospital.

The creation by artist Dean Lauze features forest creatures depicted as whispering and lullaby for babies to fall asleep and encourages visitors to sing along to the melody of a traditional lullaby.

The new mural also features baby balloons that can be purchased for parents to acknowledge the child’s birth and support the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) at the same time.

The balloons can be inscribed with the infant’s name, birthdate and weight and ultimately serve as a symbolism of hope and celebration when children leave the hospital.

The NICU is where newborn babies with low birth weight or a health condition are placed to receive special care from hospital staff.

The idea to revamp the room was initiated by FVHCF executive director Elizabeth Harris.

“I always aim to make the hospital not always feel like a clinical space. It is important for patients, parents, and staff to feel stimulated by an environment that is calming,” she said.

Responding to her call was Lauze, who has a niche for transforming clinical spaces into colourful and less intimidating ones.

Dr. Lakhbir Jassal of the FVHCF said design strategies such as this support the well-being of families, patients and staff.

“I was so pleased to hear first-hand from patients and staff what a difference a colourful mural can make in brightening up a space that can be a difficult environment,” Jassal said.

The FVHCF is now hoping to raise $20,000 for a mural outside the pediatric area.

Those wishing to support FVHCF projects can visit fvhcf.ca or contact Dr. Jassal at 778-552-5117 or Lakhbir.Jassal@fraserhealth.ca.
