Environment Canada is warning of “above seasonal” hot temperatures in the Fraser Valley that are expected to persist into next week.

According to a special weather statement on Thursday (July 4), daytime high temperatures will reach into the upper 20s to low 30s.

“A building ridge of high pressure over the region is beginning to usher in above seasonal temperature,” the statement reads.

Temperatures are expected to cool down into the mid-teens overnight, and cooler temperatures are forecast near water.

Environment Canada says there is a “great deal of uncertainty” on the timeline of the hot stretch and heat warnings could be required.

The statement urges locals to keep an eye out for the effects of heat illness, including heavy sweating, rash, cramps, fainting, high body temperature and the worsening of some health conditions.

Environment Canada also advises the public never to leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

“Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building,” the statement reads.

In a news release, the City of Mission provided tips for keeping cool and healthy during hot weather.

The tips include advising residents to stay hydrated, placing air conditioners in rooms that can be closed off, scheduling outdoor activities during cooler times, and asking someone to check in with you.

Cooling centres are also available throughout the Fraser Valley.

In Mission, the Mission Public Library, Mission Leisure Centre, Mission Friendship Centre, and Haven in the Hollow are available to cool off and access water when temperatures reach 30 degrees.

The Abbotsford Recreation Centre, Matsqui Recreation Centre, Abbotsford Community Library, Clearbrook Library, Mt. Lehman Library and Reach Gallery Museum are listed as Abbotsford’s cooling centres that are open as needed throughout the summer.

The City of Chilliwack website encourages residents to remember to check on those who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
