Condition of the youth unknown, after violence next door to July 1 celebrations

A teen was stabbed in downtown Maple Ridge on Canada Day.

The Walmart store was closed early on July 1, and yellow police tape blocked the doors into the evening.

There are reports people witnessed the violent incident between two teens at the retailer in Haney Place Mall, near the mall entrance, resulting in the store being evacuated, in the late evening.

One person said in an online post that she had gone through the checkout when she heard screaming, and she heard someone had been stabbed. She said the police were on scene quickly.

There were numerous police cars and officers at the scene. There were many officers at the nearby Canada Day community celebrations in Memorial Peace Park, beside the mall.

Witnesses have confirmed there was a stabbing incident.

The condition of the youth is not known at this time. The News has reached out to the Ridge Meadows RCMP for comment.

The store was opened for business as usual on Tuesday morning.

More details as they become available.
