PHOTOS: Abbotsford schools play on day 2 of BC School Sports Rugby Provincials

W.J. Mouat, Abbotsford Senior, Robert Bateman and Yale go combined 6-2 on second day

Eight teams from four Abbotsford schools played on day two of the BC School Sports Rugby Provincials.

It was a successful day for the host city as their teams went 6-2.

All three teams from Robert Bateman Secondary School – 2A boys, 2A girls and junior boys – came out with victories. The Bateman junior boys punched their ticket to the championship final after a 26-10 victory over South Delta Wednesday evening. The players will get a day off before they are back in action on Friday (May 31) at 1 p.m. against Collingwood.

Robert Bateman 2A boys beat Rockridge 55-3. They move on to play Earl Marriott on Thursday (May 30) at 7 p.m. in tier one action.

Robert Bateman 2A girls had a landslide 83-5 victory over L.V. Rogers, who are from Nelson. Despite the one-sided contest, both teams played hard until the last moment. Bateman will play D.W. Poppy on Thursday (May 30) at 3 p.m.

Yale Secondary School also has three teams in the tournament. The 3A tier two boys beat Mount Boucherie 37-5. They move on to play Riverside on Friday (May 31) at 3 p.m.

The Yale 3A girls put on a defensive clinic in their matchup, winning 15-0 over Carson Graham. They move on to play Cowichan on Thursday evening (May 30) at 5 p.m.

The junior boys from Yale played in a close one, but lost 22-19 against Kelowna. They will play for seventh place against Shawnigan Lake on Friday (May 31) at 5 p.m.

Abbotsford Senior Secondary School found success with their only team in the tournament. The 3A tier two boys beat Claremont 28-20. They will play Kitsilano on Friday (May 31) at 3 p.m.

W.J. Mouat Secondary School 3A girls lost 25-22 against G.P. Vanier, who are from Courtenay. They play Lord Tweedsmuir on Thursday (May 30) at 11 a.m.

The tournament features schools from across B.C. in rugby sevens and 15s. It runs until Saturday (June 1) at Abbotsford Exhibition Park (32470 Haida Dr.).
