PHOTOS: Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman wins junior boys rugby provincial championship

Timberwolves beat Collingwood School 22-15 to claim title at Rotary Stadium on Friday (May 31)

Robert Bateman Secondary School won the junior boys rugby provincial championship on Friday afternoon (May 31) at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford.

The Timberwolves defeated West Vancouver’s Collingwood School 22-15 to earn the title of the best junior boys team in the province.

Robert Bateman was up 7-0 at halftime. After a surge from Collingwood made it 12-10 late in the second half, Robert Bateman continued to play hard. After going up 22-10 with a few minutes left in the game it looked like the Timberwolves had sealed the deal. However, a late penalty try was awarded to Collingwood. A tense crowd looked on as play continued after the buzzer. Despite the late dramatics, Robert Bateman was able to hold on and secure the victory.

Robert Bateman won all three games they played to win the championship. They beat Shawnigan Lake 38-5 in the quarter-final and South Delta 26-10 in the semifinal.

The tournament features schools from across B.C. in rugby sevens and 15s. It runs until Saturday (June 1) at Abbotsford Exhibition Park (32470 Haida Dr.).
