Langley RCMP said a police incident that forced the evacuation of a Langley City apartment building on Canada Day was the result of an early morning phone call from a person suffering a "mental health episode."
According to one witness, close to a dozen first responder vehicles, police, fire and ambulance, arrived at the building in the 5000 block of 204 Street on Monday morning, July 1, cordoning off the road for several hours.
A Langley RCMP statement said at approximately 4:50 a.m., the detachment received a call from an individual at that location, and "during the call it became apparent they were suffering from a mental health episode."
Langley RCMP, members of the Emergency Response Team and a crisis negotiator were called in.
"Officers were able to successfully and safely remove this individual from their residence who was then transported to a hospital to receive appropriate care," the police statement said.
By mid-morning officers had left the scene and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
"Langley RCMP understands the importance of mental health and would like to reassure the public there is currently no ongoing risk," the statement added.
Pyramid Apartments on 5360 204th St. where the incident took place, is a 44-unit, four-storey apartment building built in 1977, and is slated to be replaced by a 12-storey building with 370 units – 317 strata, and 53 rental units.
