Three students from Abbotsford will be moving forward in the annual skills competition.

More than 75 students attended the Skills Canada Regional competition at the UFV Chilliwack on March 2, with the gold medal winners heading for the provincials at the Tradex next month. The series of competitions gives students a chance to showcase their skills and knowledge in the trades and technology sector.

The Abbotsford students moving forward are Wyatt Rempel from ASIA Sumas Mountain, who competed in automotive technology; Bjorn Thoma from Abbotsford Senior Secondary, who competed in carpentry; and Gabriella Neufeld from Yale Secondary, who competed in electrical.

While competing, all the students involved had the opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain exposure to potential career paths.

Skills Canada British Columbia (SCBC) offers programming to middle school, secondary and post-secondary institutions, which is designed to inspire, develop, and elevate youth in skilled trades and technology careers. Each year, SCBC helps thousands of students explore rewarding careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors.

The Skills Canada Provincial Competition will be held on April 19 at Tradex and will feature multiple trades, including welding, 2D animation, automotive, culinary arts, fashion tech and many more.
