Abbotsford Police impound 42 vehicles in 48 hours

Highest speed recorded in enforcement project is 147 km/h in 60 km/h zone

A recent project by the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) resulted in 42 cars being impounded for excessive speeding within a 48-hour period.

APD media officer Art Stele said the traffic enforcement unit focused during the week of June 16 on commuter and high-traffic areas, using "covert and overt" approaches.

The 42 drivers who were stopped were each issued a ticket for excessive speed and had their vehicles impounded for seven days. Stele said a total of almost $16,000 in fines was issued.

The highest speed recorded was 147 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Stele said speeding is the top factor in car-crash fatalities in B.C. He said, on average, 84 people die and 2,168 are injured every year in speed-related crashes.

Sgt. Paul Walker with the traffic enforcement unit said the unit uses "various enforcement strategies" on the roads.

"Road safety needs to be a community-led approach, and we are asking everyone to take some extra time while on the roads," he said.
